For Emma’s 12th birthday celebration we planned a day at Drakes Beach at Point Reyes for Saturday October 4—the only day it’s rained here in the last three months. No worry, the idea is to remain flexible, we made a last minute change to Sunday and enjoyed a weather-perfect day for surf-wading and sand-castle building. After an on-site, outdoor shower and change of clothes, the girls giggled their way through hot chocolate at the beach cafe and opened presents just before closing. We returned to Petaluma for dinner at Mary’s Pizza Shack where the staff provided a rousing version of “Happy Birthday” and threw in a slice of Mud Pie large enough for five girls and two adults to share. The evening was topped off with a clowns-in-a-minicar kind of pony ride on the carousel. It was a day a parent always hopes for but seems to happen moment by moment in a serendipitous sort of way.
Eleanor Perkiss is a teacher at Mary Collins Elementary School in Petaluma. She has two children: a son who is student teaching in San Francisco (not for the faint of heart) and a biologist daughter.
